Firstly, I would like to introduce Lilian Jang,
the artist behind these beautiful fashion illustrations.
I recently commissioned Lilian to produce an illustrated version of one of my most loved and most
influential outfits worn by my style icon, none other than Kate Bosworth. (I believe it was she whom
ignited my admiration for all-grey combos.) For weeks and most likely months, I had stalked Lilian's
Instagram feed (@_yooneui) and starred jaw-dropped at these figures she had created from a sole
photograph. I had longed for a new art piece to display in my bedroom, an illustration - I thought would
be perfect, given my love for fashion drawing and my university background. So once I found out that
it was possible to get a custom illustration done, I was over the moon!
I was recently lucky enough to interview Lilian Jang to find out more
about her and to share her mind-blowing talent with you...
1. Name, Age, City...
My name is Lilian Jang, I am 20 years old and I live in New York City.
2. Has fashion illustration always been a skill for you?
Fashion illustration has not always been a skill for me. I started doing fashion illustration a little
over a year ago and I was a terrible illustrator! I had to continue drawing in order to improve.
(There's hope for us yet!)
3. Are you currently studying at school?
I am currently studying fashion design at Parsons the New School for Design.
4. What or who are your influences when it comes to creating a new piece?
My sister, Salene Jang, is my inspiration to creating new pieces. She is an illustrator and she never
stops coming up with new ideas.
5. What tools; markers, pens, paper, etc. do you use?
A lot of people ask me if I use watercolour but I actually use markers! I use Micron pens and
Prismacolor markers on marker paper.
(There's the dirt for you fellow illustrators wanting the goss!)
6. Who has been your favourite to illustrate?
My clients have been my favourite to illustrate. I enjoy illustrating celebrities, models, and fashion
bloggers but I love getting to know my clients personally throughout the process, and I love
illustrating people who appreciate my work.
7. Who would you love to notice your work?
I would love to be noticed by people who appreciate fashion illustration.
8. Where would you like to see yourself career-wise in the near future?
I hope to work in the womenswear department in the fashion industry after I graduate from Parsons.
9. What do you have in store for yourself in 2015?
In 2015, I am planning to work harder to pursue my dream as a designer and to travel
as much as I can!
Keep updated with Lilian's work via her Instagram page, which is growing by the second
And head over to her website where you can purchase any of her existing illustrations, or like me,
have one custom made as a gift for yourself or a loved one.
x.
